What's the difference—colons, dashes, and semicolons?

There's overlap. But here are the main differences:

  • Colons and dashes usually point to examples or explanations. In other words, they usually extend the idea in the sentence.
  • Semicolons usually point to a similar or opposite idea—not to an explanation or an example.

Sound vague enough? That's why I said there's overlap!
